December
17th, 2007 - By Dalmarus

My
original plan for this week’s newsletter was to discuss the
great additions we’ve all seen with the latest Game Update,
number 3.2. Since everyone has been waiting for much of the content we
knew was coming (the Ancient Port Warehouse), there was plenty to talk
about. Add in the fact that we also got a semi-permanent flying mount
in the form of Randolph the Flying Reindeer, special holiday treats,
and more, I thought we would have plenty to chat about.

While my original idea may have been sound, I made one drastic mistake
in my planning. Since I can’t play everywhere and with
everyone, I decided to take a quick hop over on the official forums to
get a feel for how people are enjoying the new content.

The first thread I looked at even had a positive title, but within a
smattering of posts, began to devolve into a festering pool of ooze.

Well, perhaps that’s just a single incident, right? Maybe I
just hadn’t looked far enough? I could accept that as being
reasonable, so I continued to scour other posts on the boards, this
time not limiting myself to those of just the official forums.

With the exception of admittedly a large number of posters stating
their praises for the newfound fun and excitement while exploring the
Ancient Port Warehouse, there was one resounding theme through the
majority of posts…

“Gimmee, whine, gimmee, gimmee, whine, gimmee even
more!!!”

There is currently a known issue with the Ancient Port Warehouse that
involves the ping spiking upwards of 9k. Even going up as high as 2-3k
and staying there is enough to make encounters impossible to feasibly
complete. This issue does not happen all the time, and the developers
are continuing to make adjustments.

Both Silius and Wamtin have stated that they believe it is a coding
issue. It is not a network issue, but an issue with some of the game
play code that is currently not scaling well and may need to be
re-written.

The Ancient Port Warehouse hasn’t been live for a week, and
there are people on the forums stating that the developers
shouldn’t even be able to sleep at night without getting this
fixed immediately.

Out of curiosity, why do players feel they have the right to demand
instant fixes all the time? This game wasn’t built on your
father’s Commodore 64, and saying the game as it was handed
to SOE was “faulty” is the biggest understatement
of the year.

The developers are working their tails off trying to get things fixed.
Considering the big steaming pile they were originally given, I think
they’ve made great strides.

And for those players that believe the developers are just kicking
back, twiddling their thumbs because they don’t care about
the game? Grow up.

They take the game and their jobs very seriously. If the game tanks,
they’re out of a job. That means no paycheck, and no way to
pay the bills. All you have to do is read a fraction of their posts to
realize they care about this game and its players deeply.

There have been some great additions added to the game this week.
I’ve been having a blast with Randolph, snowballs, and
hearing about some of the exciting exploits being lived within the
Ancient Port Warehouse.

On top of all this, a number of class fixes came through this patch as
well.

The developers have shown a genuine interest in doing everything they
can to make our play sessions as enjoyable as possible and have made
great headway with numerous bugs.

Instead of complaining about how everything isn’t perfect for
you in the game, how about taking a moment to enjoy what has been
added/fixed, take a deep breath, and realize the developers are people
too and will get things fixed as soon as they can?
