The death penalties of an MMORPG have always been a hot topic and Artix Entertainment's new death penalty change for AdventureQuest Worlds (AQW) should bring about some interesting conversations. AQW players will now find a new surprise waiting for them the next time their character takes a dirt nap with a 9-second in-game advertisement. The ad will feature a brief message from Death himself, who will make a personal appearance when a player dies to deliver a witty line and a short static advertisement for an Artix Entertainment-related item.

The previous death penalty left players with a grayed out screen of their dead character that counted down from 9 before returning them to life. The time hasn't changed, but instead of the gray screen players now get a visit from Death with a short advertisement. You didn't think the afterlife was all kittens and roses did you?

Paying members will still have the option to turn off the ads if they choose. See the official press release after the break for more.

Artix’s MMORPG AdventureQuest Worlds Introduces a Fate Worse Than Death:  Die In-game and You’re Punished by Watching Boring Ads

Artix Entertainment punishes players who die by forcing them to endure a 9-second advertisement before returning to life.

LAND O'LAKES, FLORIDA - July 5, 2011 – Artix Entertainment, a small, independent game development studio that creates hit F2P (Free-to-Play) download-free browser games played by over 130 million people, announced today that players of the popular AdventureQuest Worlds MMORPG are being punished for dying in-game by being forced to see an advertisement for nine seconds before being allowed to return to life.

Previously, AdventureQuest Worlds players who died in-game would be faced with a grayed out screen showing their character on the ground and a nine second countdown before they could return back to life. With this new change, when a player dies, Death makes a personal appearance on the player’s screen and says a witty line while showing a static ad of an Artix Entertainment-related game or item.

"For years our players scoffed at how there was no real punishment for dying in AQWorlds," said Adam Bohn, CEO/Founder of Artix Entertainment, LLC. "So we added a fate worse than death... ads!"

Currently three Artix ads are being shown. One advertises the AdventureQuest Worlds Anything-Goes Battle On Battle Card Game available in U.S. Toys R Us stores and Another ad advertises how to earn free AdventureCoins (in-game micro-currency).  The third one advertises the benefits of becoming a Member.

One of the benefits of becoming a Member in AdventureQuest Worlds is the ability to turn off these Death Ads!
