Video games have historically not had the best of luck when being adapted to the big screen. Often times the movies about the games very vaguely even resemble the source material that they are representing. BioWare believes that this will change with the upcoming movie adaptation of their Mass Effect series by Legendary Pictures.

style="font-style: italic;">Can BioWare cause a Mass Effect for game adaptations to the big screen?

Over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures held a panel in which they were joined by Mass Effect Executive Producer Casey Hudson and screenwriter Mark Protosevich, who talked about the upcoming movie and how they feel that the story and lore behind the game is just as huge as that of Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings.

The movie is still in early production so details are still a little skimpy, but what we do know is that according to the panel, the movie will focus on events centered on the first game, which could also indicate a possible movie trilogy in the same vein as the games. In the first game, Commander Shepard discovered a beacon containing knowledge of a machine-like race that wiped out the galaxy in the past known as the reapers. The game climaxes with Shepard's epic showdown between the reaper known as Sovereign and leading into the sequel that expands on the conflict of the reaper threat.

Could Mass Effect be the first video game movie to actually do blockbuster numbers at the box office? The potential is certainly there, but all too many times in the past we have seen video game movies release as total abominations. Case in point Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead and Super Mario Bros. just to name a few. And if you haven’t seen any of those movies…good.

With any luck the skilled team at BioWare will be able to aid in crafting a Mass Effect movie that tells a story with a well-formed narrative and epic feel on the big screen as well as in the game.
