Good news for space sim and PC fans. Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts set in motion his efforts to crowd fund his new title, Star Citizen, through Kickstarter in October, and in just a few days the Kickstarter goal of $500,000 was reached. The Kickstarter officially ended yesterday and raised more than $2 million pledged, and with what Roberts has raised on his own website, the total crowd funding for the game now exceeds more than $6,300,000, a smashing of the old record of over $4.1 million held by Obsidian's Project Eternity.

While Star Citizen is not an MMOG, it will adopt some of the used features from MMOGs to the game such as bringing a permanent, persistent world to an offline, single player campaign akin to the Wing Commander series. Roberts also vowed that Star Citizen will support private servers, modding and more. Star Citizen will be available for the PC as the official FAQ notes “Star Citizen is a PC game through and through and could never be played on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or WiiU.” The game will be available for PC Windows with possible support for Linux and Mac.

Given the huge success of the Star Citizen crowd funding drive, Roberts won't be needing a publisher. How do you feel about that? Will not having a publisher to hinder development with deadlines help the game, or likewise will their lack of resources hinder it? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
