Warhammer Online: Why the Casual Player Should Welcome Back PvP

RvR is coming! Quick, act casual!

By Brock "Brokain" Ferguson

Well, if you stopped by yesterday you got a look into how combining PvP and PvE in Warhammer online is a good thing. The second part of the article takes a look at the how PvE might be affected by a world influenced by PvP.

“Well, that’s nice Brokain” you say, “but how will PvE play be affected by a world influenced heavily by PvP/RvR?” Answer, not to much from the way it’s being described. Warhammer Online has so many things going on for it on both sides of the fence, that neither PvP nor PvE will be lacking. Casual players will have more quests than Uwe Bolle has box office flops. Feel like raiding? Public Quests fill that need to be with a bunch of people working towards the same big goal. Feel like soloing? Open up your Tome of Knowledge and see what it has to say. Just want to do mindless quests? There’ll be quest givers all over the place plus, you can just accidentally stumble into quests by walking around. All this without ever having to PvP.

On the PvP side of the fence there will be several different types of PvP activities to keep hardcore players busy as well. Outside of your standing hunter/hunted scenario, there will be instances, capture the flag style battles, keep sieges, and the end game of taking over the opposite factions city that will keep even the most hardcore PvP player busy for some time. If the PvP crowd does get bored, there are still only certain areas in the zone where open PvP takes place so it wouldn't spill over into PvE play. For all the effort that EA Mythic has put into the PvP game, they've put an equal amount into the PvE game. It will take a combination of both play styles though to open up the end game for everyone, something else that only enhances the PvE play.

The main effect that having PvE play in a world with heavy PvP/RvR influences is going to have is that now, all that questing will mean something. Even the casual player who chooses to play in a PvE style from start to finish, which is possible as per EA Mythic, will be able to contribute to the war effort. Just because you choose not to engage in PvP/RvR doesn't mean you get left out of the main story. Now granted, if you want to participate in the end game, you will have to engage in a little RvR as City Sieges, what the war effort is gearing towards, require you to go and sack the opposing faction’s city. However, that is once again not mandatory. You never have to engage in PvP in order to play and level your character.

In the end, I’m sure there are some negative points to combining PvP and PvE on the same server. However, having the ability to choose to PvP, because some idiot cut me off on the way home from work and I want to share my pain with the first Human/Dwarf/High Elf I come across? Or choosing PvE, because I’ve had an exhausting day and I just want to escape with as little stress as possible? With the ability to make either choice without having to jump to a completely different server and away from my friends, away from my guild, on a character that I really view as a utility? Well, that has more pros than cons any day.
