is one of many
primary professions found inside World of Warcraft. Unlike other
professions that produce tangible objects, Enchanting provides the
player with the ability to enchant (add various stats and other effects
to) items, as well as the ability to disenchant magical items into
materials that are in turn used to enchant items. Thanks to these two
abilities playing off each other Enchanting is possibly one of the
easiest professions to level, especially if completed while the player
levels up.

As mentioned above, Enchanting
is a primary profession which means it counts towards the two
profession limit of all characters. You can unlearn Enchanting at any
time; however, doing so will result in the undoing of any skill points
you have earned as well as any special recipes you have learned along
the way. Enchanting can be a very profitable profession for those who
choose to work at it.

Inside this guide to Enchanting
in World of Warcraft goes over the basics and is filled full of
information sure to aid the new Enchanter in mastering this profession.

Enchanting - Getting Started

To get started on your
Enchanting journey in WoW, seek out an Enchanting Trainer. Enchanting
Trainers can be found in all major cities and their location can be
revealed by simply speaking with the nearest city guard. Choose
“Profession Trainer” then
“Enchanting” and your map will be marked with the
exact location of an Enchanting Trainer making finding these sometimes
elusive NPCs a snap.

Once you have sought out your
Enchanting Trainer, right click on the NPC and learn Apprentice
Enchanting, the lowest tier of Enchanting skill and the beginning to
your journey in this profession. Disenchanting will be automatically
learned once you have chosen Enchanting as one of your professions. As
you level your Enchanting you will need to return to the trainer from
time to time to advance to the next rank. Opening a new rank allows you
to not only continue to increase your skill, but also, learn more
powerful recipes. The various tiers of Enchanting are as follows:

(Burning Crusade) 300
-375 style="text-align: center; background-color: rgb(202, 188, 162);">Grand
Master (WotLK) 375-450 style="text-align: center; background-color: rgb(202, 188, 162);">Illustrious
(Cataclysm) 450-525

Remember, if you decide
Enchanting is not the profession for you then it can be unlearned at
any time.

Secondary Professions

Unlike other crafting
professions Enchanting does not rely on any kind of gathering
profession such as Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism. Instead players
typically take up another crafting profession that will help provide
green items for the Enchanter to disenchant. The most popular crafting
profession to accompany Enchanting tends to be Tailoring, however, if
you feel Blacksmithing or Leatherworking would better suit your style,
these are also viable options.

Enchanting Perks

Every single profession in WoW
has a perk that defines it and makes it special onto itself. Enchanting
is no different and its perk is quite appealing. Each Enchanter will
find that they will be able to add enchants to both of their rings,
something not possible outside this profession. These two extra
enchants give Enchanters extra stats and bonuses that will boost
various stats and give the Enchanter a clear advantage.

Skilling up Enchanting in WoW

Once you have learned the
Enchanting skill you will want to put it to use and begin leveling it
up. Open your Enchanting window and familiarize yourself with it. Along
with some self explanatory buttons you will also find the various
enchants you are currently able to perform, what these enchants do,
what items the enchants are able to be placed on as well as a list of
materials needed to perform each enchant. The materials needed for
enchants generally includes various dusts and essences, obtained
through Disenchanting or the Auction House, as well as various rods
which can also be bought on the Auction House or created by a

Unlike many other professions
in WoW, once you have the materials for a particular enchant you will
either be placing the enchant on an already existing item, or on a
Vellum (a type of paper material made by Inscriptionists) which will
hold the enchant so it can be stored and sold on the Auction House or
saved for a later date. Since low level enchants typically are not able
to be sold, only the highest level enchants are placed on Vellums.
Instead Enchanters skilling up instead typically enchant their own
pieces of gear or enchant random items they have picked up along the
way. This is especially effective as items can be enchanted an
unlimited amount of times. Another option is to offer your enchants for
free to other players.

Once you have chosen the
enchant and have an item to place it on, you mouse pointer will have a
slight glow around it. This means that the enchant is ready to be
applied. Simply left click on the item you wish to enchant to complete
the process. Looking for the quickest route to level your Enchanting?

The skill to Disenchant an item
is aquired the moment a player learns the Enchanting profession. This
ability allows the player to turn the magical properties of green
quality or higher items and turn them into the essential dusts and
other materials that Enchanters need to perform enchants. To Disenchant
an item simply select “Disenchant” from your spell
book and a glow will appear around your mouse. Left click on the item
you wish to Disenchant and a bar will appear letting you know how long
it will take to Disenchant the item. WARNING! Choosing to Disenchant an
item is permanent! While you can interrupt the cast, once an item has
been Disenchanted there is no going back!

Once the Disenchanting process
is completed a loot window will appear and you will be able to see and
loot the various Enchanting materials that particular item has
produced. While most green quality and above items will be able to be
Disenchanted there are some exceptions including but not limited to:

  • Non-equipable items.
  • Bags
  • Consumables
  • Vendor Purchased BOP items

Your Enchanting skill will
determine what level items you may Disenchant, the higher your skill
the higher level items you may use. It is also useful to note that
Disenchanting items also will give Enchanting skill points to the
player for a short period of time.

Making Gold with Enchanting

Turning a profit with
Enchanting in the old days used to be more than a little work, but with
the introduction of Vellums making a profit as an Enchanter has become
much, much easier. Enchanters can now simply need to pinpoint a hot
selling enchant, place it on a Vellum and then place it on the Auction
House and wait for it to sell. Since enchants need to be replaced every
time a player gets a new piece of gear, the Enchanting business is
nearly always booming.

Not one for sitting around and
waiting? Enchanters can also choose to do things the old fashioned way
and head to a major city. Here they may advertise their wares in Trade
Chat for potential buyers. If you choose to do this, be sure to decide
on your prices beforehand and try to keep them competitive. Also be
sure to work out a price list beforehand and be courteous and fair to
your customers.

Players may also make a profit
by using the Disenchanting skill. Simply take the dusts, essences and
other items you receive after Disenchatning an item and place them on
the Auction House or advertise them in Trade Chat. The most cost
effective way to do this is to only use items that you collect,
however, more motivated players may also buy items off the Auction
House and Disenchant them for profit. This is a delicate process and
you must be sure the item price does not exceed the gold you will
eventually make.
