Gems (also known by some as Jewels) are items that fit inside of sockets that are located within some of the higher level gear (generally level 61+). They all contain a little magical power that bolsters your statistics in some way or another. Multi Colored Gems
The following are multi-colored gems that fit the description of either red, blue, and/or yellow. These gems right now have iffy locations and the majority of them (especially the epic ones) shouldn't be placed in a good quantity of gear that players currently have access too (majority of these should be saved for Tier 4 gear or at the VERY least Heroic purples).
The locations of most of these gems are drops in heroic dungeons, with a few crafted and even fewer for sale with Dealer Senzik. Assume that any uncommon colored gems is available through jewelcrafting, the majority of the rare gems through jewelcrafting, and all of the epic gems are heroic dungeon drops.
A lot of your uncommon jewels can be found on Dealer Senzik. Rest are quested, crafted, or droped. Unlike the single color ones these are much more powerful and are more difficult to obtain generally.
Remember, gems can go into ANY socket except the meta socket. This means that a "Yellow or Red socket" gem will qualify for a yellow or red socket bonus, but will go into any socket. For qualifying for a meta gem the multi-colored gems will count as both of their base colors, so one that fits into a "Yellow or Red socket" will count as a Yellow AND Red gem.

Meta Gems
Where the multi-colored gems shine, meta gems glow. Not only is a massive amount of stats generally applied to a meta gem but you get the added bonus of additional effects. For instance, a Swift Skyfire Diamond will grant you +24 attack power AND minor run speed boost!
The only drawback is that the meta socket is a very rare socket and the gems themselves aren't exactly easy to obtain. On top of that, each gem has it's own requirment before it can activate. The requirement is usually a min/max of other colored gems. For this requirement, multi-colored gems are counted as having both of each color.
All known meta gems generally require a Jewelcrafting of high skill to create them. They each have a cooldown of 60 minutes, so they are not easily mass produced.
