Westfall
Alliance - Levels 10 - 20
Quest Guide
It’s time to roll up your sleeves (well if you have mail armor I doubt you could roll that up…) and begin your heroic journey saving this zone from the band of rogues! As you journey through Westfall you should be aware of a few drops. Hops (used by a Dwarf), Oil (used by a Pirate), and Okra (used in Westfall Stew) are all quest items that can be useful later on (and are dropped from the mechanical harvest enemies). So be sure to save them as you go! By the way, yes there is a GHOSTLY PIRATE in this zone, which is about the number one reason for you to level here.
I don’t’ exactly tell you when to turn in quests, because it’s my opinion that it’s unwise to turn in a quest unless you need the reward or the quest will make you hit the next level. The footwork required to get turn in the quest could be well spent moving to the next area to fight more enemies of evil. So whenever you have enough quests completed to level up, you pass a quest turn in point in your travels, or a quest provides a reward you need then go ahead and turn the quests in. Otherwise just save them until a more convenient time.
As you enter Westfall, you’ll notice two people standing near a broken wagon. Head on over and talk to them (don’t worry, unlike the majority of those who inhbit this zone, they won’t try to stab you). Verna Furlbrow will give you the quest Westfall Stew and Poor Old Blanchy while Farmer Furlbrow will give you the The Forgotten Heirloom. We’ll complete these quests in a minute, let’s go pick up more quests for efficiency first.
Continue along the road until you reach Saldean’s Farm (have a look at our map to find it). Sneak along the wall of the farm (to avoid aggro of any nearby enemies) until you reach Farmer Saldean. He’ll give you a quest called The Killing Fields. Head on inside his house and speak with Salma Saldean to get the next part of Westfall Stew along with Goretusk Liver Pie. When finished, head out of here towards Sentinel Hill.
You can’t miss Sentinel Hill, it’s a giant defensive tower sitting on top of a hill. It’s the only “safe” area within this land (area that is controlled by guards). It has an inn, several shops, and a flight point. So it’s not that sparse and is located close to a lot of the questing areas. Anyway, head up to the giant tower and talk with Gryan Stoutmantle. You may have a quest from Elwynn Forest for him, if so turn it in. Pick up The People’s Militia from him and head to Captian Denuvin. He’ll give you Patrolling Westfall. Inside, Quartermaster Lewis will give you A Swift Message. Leave out of the tower and head down the hill toward the Lumber Mill. Here, Scout Galiaan will give you Red Leather Bandanas. Next to the mill is an inn if you wish to make this zone your home.
After you are done grabbing the quests, head over to Thor the Gryphon Master. Turn in A Swift Message and pick up Continue to Stormwind. You can head to Stormwind later if you like. I always save this quest until I’m level 12 so that I can train my skills and get this quest done at the same time. If you need the XP now to level though, go for it.
When you have finished your business in Sentinel Hill, it’s time to head northward. Now is when I get a quest out of the way that involves a lot of footwork. Both Goretusk Liver Pie and Westfall Stew need drops from Goretusk, which have a spotty drop rate for their livers. So I always get this one done first and out of the way. Anyway, to start off start slaying Young Goretusk which are all around the northern part of Westfall. You should be able to find plenty anywhere north of Sentinel Hill. While you are fighting them for eight livers and three snouts, go ahead and take on any nearby vultures for their Stringy Vulture Meat. You’ll need three of them! The Young Goretusks are around level 12-13 and I had no problem taking out the level 13 ones at level 11 as a Mage. This is very good experience as well, especially if you are rested!
When you have three Stringy Vulture Meats, eight Goretusk Livers, and three Goretusk Snouts, head toward the northern part of Longshore. Here you’ll find lower level Murlocs who drop Murloc Eyes. Take ‘em out until you have three of their eyes. I know I know, this stew doesn’t sound very tasty, but in the land of magic anything is possible!! Watch out for the patrolling Murlocs, they sometimes can bring a friend and more then one Murloc is generally trouble (they use a slowing potion which can be dangerous).
After you are done with the Murlocs (thankfully), head up the hill some and meet your new best (worst) friends, the Gnolls (Patrolling Westfall)! Unlike the Murlocs, they are nowhere near as cool but they still hurt a lot when they hit you with their sticks. One kind of Gnoll uses a crossbow while the other hits you with a stick. As a reminder, any ranged enemy will go into melee (for about the same damage) if you get within melee range of them. If you try to flee, they will whip out their ranged weapon again and start shooting. Anyway, take out enough Gnolls to gain 8 Gnoll Paws. Shouldn’t be much work, just be careful of the camps of Gnolls. Like Murlocs (and any other Humanoid enemy) they will call any nearby friends to their aid. You may need to do this quest later, after you've gotten to level tweleve or so.
With all but one stew ingredient yours and the Gnolls defeated, head toward the Jansen’s Stead. All around the farm area you will find bags of oats. You’ll need these to feed the Furlbrow’s horse. While here, take out any Harvest Golems in your way. They drop Okra, which is the last ingredient in the stew (shouldn’t be no trouble at all). When you have enough oats and okra, get ready for a little trip to the farm next door (which also has oats if you are having trouble finding them).
Furlbrow’s Pumpkin Patch is right next door to Jansen’s Stead (check our map out) so you should have no problem finding it. Once there, you will see a barn and a house. The house has a cabinet in which the trinket is located. The house is guarded by two Defias outside and a named Defias on the inside. You can either defeat the Defias outside and the guy inside (you may need a friend) or you can somehow distract them all (rooting or fearing them) while you loot the cabinet. Both ways work, when you are done simply leave and head west toward Jangolode Mine.
Jangolode Mine has plenty of Defias for you to take out (along with a little west of Sentinel Hill). Defias Smugglers and Trappers are your prime enemies for The People’s Militia. You need to slay twelve of each, and lucky for you they drop Red Leather Bandanas (you can start collecting them now, you have more defies to kill soon so you don’t necessarily need to get all twelve from these). You shouldn’t have too much trouble with them as long as you around level eleven or twelve.
When finished with everything, start turning in any quests that you haven’t turned in yet and then head for the Gryphon Master at Sentinel Hill. Assuming you are level twelve, now is a good time to do that delivery! Take the flight to Stormwind and head for Old Town (see our Stormwind guide for a map). In the east side of Stormwind you’ll find an armory with a fellow named Osric Strang inside. He’ll give you a load of armaments and give you the quest Dungar Longdrink. Get your business done in Stormwind (or head to Loch Modan to do more quests), when finished head back to Westfall by Gryphon Again (you’ll pick up the quest Return to Lewis from Dungar Longdrink before you fly back to Westfall).
Now it’s time to head to the Saldean Farm to assist in slaying the Harvest Watchers (The Killing Fields). They are outside in his field, you can’t really miss them. (There are other camps around the zone too.) Just slay twenty of them and see Farmer Saldean for your reward. If they are too difficult, then head to Westfall (or Darkshore) and level up a bit more. They are level 15 so you need to be about level 13 to efficiently deal with them.
At this point you are finished with the non-pirate non-defias quests in Westfall. What a lot of people do at this point is go to Loch Modan and level up until they are 15-16 and head to Redridge to level to about 18 and then return to complete all of the Defias quests (which lead up the Deadmines instance). Instead of boring you with the details on the future defies quests, let me just point you toward our Quest Database and our Instance Encyclopedia. They give a pretty good insight on how to defeat this line of quests.
So what to from here? You can continue with The People’s Militia until the quests get way above your level or you can head to Loch Modan and start levelling up there. If you are about level 15 then you can head to Redridge and begin questing there. There is a pirate at the Lighthouse who has a few interesting (and novel) quests that give some XP. One is to bring him oil while another is to kill an elite Murloc on the coast nearby.
There is also a dwarf in the Dagger Hills who will take hops and give you a brew. The first time you do this you’ll get a fair amount of experience, but every time after just gives you a little.
Thank you for reading this guide, I hoped it has helped you with the confusing process of levelling up in different (and somewhat dynamic) environments. If you have any suggestions then please feel free to email me at Xerin at TenTonHammer.com.
