Well this is an interesting story. Blizzard have made all the Warcraft III assets available in Starcraft 2's editor. For anyone wanting to create a new Warcraft experience, this means you can now do so with Blizzard's blessing. Over on Battle.net Blizzard has written a pretty lengthy post about the gift. Bringing over 3,000 new materials as well as new Hero models for the 4 primary races, there's a ton of assets that people will be able to utilise. On top of that, Blizzare are also throwing in neutral creatures and their sounds as well as doodads, structures, spell effects, ambient sounds, music and custom user interfaces for each race.

Those who utilise the new assets and make something unique with them have the opportunity to send their designs and entries into Blizzare who will showcase them in what it's calling "Memories Of War".

We’d love to see anything from screenshots of epic battles, single-player missions recreated from your favorite game, mini-games using the new assets or anything in-between. However you want to celebrate, we want to see it. Send us a link to your creations at [email protected] or tweet to us @BlizzardArcade.

What I find so great about this move is the fact that there's some well known Starcraft 2 modders out there that have already made attempts at bringing Warcraft back into an RTS game. This will give those with the talent all that they could possibly need to do just that. Does it mean Blizzard will return to making real time strategy games outside of the Starcraft IP? I'm not convinced. Either way, this is a good win for the gaming community. If you want to take part, simply select Starcraft PTR from the Region/Account dropdown on the Battle.net desktop home screen and begin the installation.
