Making a case for Ralsu to cover Warrior Epic.

The publishing rights of Warrior Epic have been picked up by True Games as it heads toward launch in the spring of 2009. Possibility Space (who thought of the company names True Games and Possibility Space? Come on marketing people, get with it) has developed Warrior Epic as a visually beautiful MMORPG that is an:

"action role-playing game set in an original fantasy world. In the game, players will assume command of a Warrior Hall from which they manage their characters’ adventures. They can recruit a wide array of character classes, each with its own style of play. The warrior classes and the Hall itself can be upgraded visually as well as functionally. Players adventure together in multiplayer campaigns, adventure mode, solo quests, and PVP. True Games and Possibility Space will soon release full product details for the game."

The press release discusses innovative gameplay but after what we've seen from the multitudes of games launched this year, it would have to be fairly epic to earn that title.

Many of you know - ok who are we kidding, you couldn't pick me out of a lineup (which is good for me) - that Danny "Ralsu" Gourley and I do not see eye to eye on free to play games. He can look beyond the shortcomings of most of them and really enjoy the core of the game while I just sit on the sidelines nitpicking everything to death. I recall a while back in one of his great Free To Play Top Ten lists (chronicled in the Ten Ton Hammer Free to Play Portal) a ballyhooed bouncing of Warrior Epic off the list. It must have been bad for Ralsu to take such drastic steps in that week's Top Ten list. The reasoning had to do with the trailer for the game depicting a Diablo, Hellgate: London style hub design where players are not in a persistent world, rather they go to meeting locations to group up and then head out on adventures.

So is that a real MMO or not? I'm not so sure. On one hand, I really enjoy having places all to myself, but in the games I've tried with the instanced-outside-the-city mechanic (i.e. Guild Wars) I've felt lonely and odd. We don't really know yet because the press release says game information will be coming soon.

Also, why are the developers waiting so long to discuss the particulars of the game? In my expereince, that is not a good sign either. Either way we will find out soon. For more information, stop by the Warrior Epic website and then give me your take on whether or not it should be considered a true MMO in our forum.
