If you browse the Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) or The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) in-game stores today you’ll find a couple of new items themed after The One Fund charity for victims of the recent bombing in Boston. You can get 10 of each item for free by entering the coupon code Boston at check out. In DDO you can get up to 10 free in-game ribbons and in LOTRO up to 10 free cloaks, each of which will be available for a limited time.

Browsing the store will show the items priced at 100 TP, and this led to some discussion in the official forums about whether the proceeds would be donated to the charity. LOTRO Community Manager Rick “Sapience” Heaton posted a response confirming that funds from sales will not be donated to the charity, and that the price is mainly there for store functions. The intended goal is for players to use the coupon code to claim the free items for their respective accounts. You can read the full post from Sapience below.

“Using the code BOSTON when you check out allows you to 'purchase' up to 10 cloaks for free. The 100 point value is there to prevent the store from choking on the item.

We investigated making the item for sale with proceeds going to The One Fund, but the timing and process behind doing that proved to be prohibitive (it would have taken a great deal of time). We want to get an item out to players who had been asking us if there was something they could do to show support and do so in a timely manner. So we created the cloak, created the coupon code to make it free, and ask that if you wish to make a donation to The One Fund you do so via http://onefundboston.org

Turbine will be making a donation to The One Fund, as many of us have individually.”

In other words, make sure that you enter that code for the free items.
