Activision Blizzard released their latest earnings report and it has revealed that World of Warcraft subscription numbers have fallen once again. Down to 5.5. million subscribers, this is 100,000 less than three months ago. While this may seem terrible, awful, and downright no good; it really is not that surprising. In fact, this drop in numbers is more than a little expected. Warlords of Draenor is not a popular expansion, players have been unimpressed with almost all the content offered up. Add into the mix that the expansion is drawing to a close and you have created a perfect storm. Subscription numbers always drop in periods where no new content is available and may not be for quite some time. Due to player dissatisfaction with Warlords, this has caused the fall to be far more pronounced than ever before.
While the game is older and many players are ready to say that this is the end of WoW, I am not so ready to call it quits. 5.5 million subscribers is still a significant amount, not as many as when the game was in its prime, but more than many games can claim. Assuming that Legion is a success, it has the potential to win back many of these players. If subscription numbers continue to fall, even immediately after the new expansions release, then it would probably be safe to say that the game is in serious trouble. With BlizzCon coming up in just a few days, we are hopefully going to find out just how long we have to wait for Legion and hopefully an uptick in subscription numbers.
