Battlerite is a team-based battle action arena game from the makers of Bloodline Champions that is making waves in the competitive gaming scene. With its fast-paced and exciting action, it’s not hard to see why Battlerite’s colorful art style is taking over the eSports screens.

The skill-intensive MOBA is finally making a move into the incredibly popular eSports arena with its newly announced Pro League. The upcoming league was teased merely with a simple poster containing a logo and some details about it taking place later this April. The free-to- play multiplayer game evolves the MOBA genre, popularised by games like League of Legends and DotA 2, by featuring one arena instead of three lanes. With only a small map to fight in and no objectives, the game is purely about action and fighting.

The game’s skill-intensive gameplay and high skill ceiling make it an exciting spectator game, whilst its top-down perspective make it an ideal and accessible viewing experience. Battlerite even includes an option to watch through a VR headset, something that other competitive games like DotA 2 have experimented with as well.

The game has enjoyed some mild success in the competitive gaming space in the past but nothing this big. The Enter the Arena tournament was previously the game’s biggest event; with the North American and European versions of the event offering $5000 each to the winners. Battlerite is currently in its 1st season and each season will be 10 weeks long, compared to League of Legend’s year-long season. The game might be heading to new levels of popularity if Sunlock Studios, the game’s developers, can keep the game interesting and exciting. Twitch and Korean publisher Nexon have also been confirmed as partners of the event.

The league will consist of four leagues: North America, South America, Europe and Korea. Open qualifiers will be held in each region, which will result in four eight league teams. The final event will see the remaining teams fight for a share of the event’s $80,000 prize pool.

Alexander Hermansson, business development and esports manager for Stunlock Studios, said: “Our community has grown and matured immensely since Battlerite was released, so it was time for us to provide a platform for the best players to show what they’re made of. By partnering with Twitch and Nexon for the Battlerite Pro League, we’re not only offering an entertaining broadcast, we’re introducing the game’s intricacies to fresh audiences, newer players, and esports fans in many different corners of the world.”

Time will tell how popular Battlerite will become, and whether it will compete with the likes of League of Legends and DotA 2. The game’s fast-paced action and unique blend of MOBA and fighting game mechanics - two of the most popular eSports genres - make it a promising idea.
