Guilds are an interesting social animal. Many people feel the need to be part of one, yet few understand how to put their best foot forward to even get into a good guild. Once there, many don't know how to act, and wind up being removed from the guild.
Having been a guild leader in more than one guild over the years, I have a rather unique perspective on the way guilds are run. Obviously, I also know what it takes to not only run a guild, but to successfully contribute to one.
Much like any relationship, a guild only works when everyone involved is getting what they need out of being involved. If someone's needs aren't met or someone's causing problems for the rest of the group, then the group is likely to be short a member in the near future.
Since guilds fulfill gaming and social needs for it's members, it makes sense for you to know what it is you need before you start looking for a guild, or decide to form your own. Remember that if you can't get what you need from the guild you join, you won't be happy or have much fun. Realistically, fun is what it's all about ;)
For those who opt to form their own guild, there's a great example out there on how NOT to go about recruiting players. Here is the link for your convenience , and you'll want to pay particular attention to Dirti as he tries to recruit members for his guild. Remember, this is how NOT to do it ;)
You also need to make sure that once you do get into the guild of your dreams you know how to act! For starters, remember that those running the guild are putting their time and effort into it to make everything more fun for everyone involved. For this alone, they deserve some degree of respect.
It's also become commonplace for guilds to have their own voice servers. The advantages of having this resource when raiding or in Player Vs Player combat is immense. Before you indulge, however, make sure you understand any rules they've established for use of the server.
Most guild don't put heavy requirements on the use of the voice server, until a raid or a PvP event is ready to begin. Typically, once these start, you will be expected to be silent and await your orders like a good little soldier ;) Be listening and be ready to carry out the order as soon as you get it, and you'll find things will go far more smoothly.
One final thing to realize is that things can and will go wrong. As they say, stuff happens. If you get your tail handed to you, it's not a good time to start casting around the blame. Remember that no one person can kill off an entire group no matter how badly they suck :P Discuss calmly, not only what happened, but ways the group might be able to make corrections so things will go more smoothly the next time.
In the end, remember to treat other people the way you'd like to be treated. Odds are that if you do so, you will spend a long time with your guild, and find many friends in the process.
