Space is far from the final frontier in the MMO marketplace...
In fact, MMOs in space are probably the next big step for MMO developers, as far as Marcus Riedner, Chief Creative Officer of Verse Studios, is concerned. Internode Games Network sat down with Riedner and discussed the reasoning behind choosing to develop a space combat MMO and why it was merely inevitable.
We are a bunch of geeks, so naturally we draw on everything from Star Trek to Bladerunner. We draw heavily on film and writing more than we do on games. I think gaming has become really incestuous and self referential, and I really want to avoid that in our products. I tend to look at games for mechanics, and culture for visual inspiration. I've also pushed our artists and designers to really focus on real world cultures, there is so much visual history that is ignored by video games and that really needs to change. I'm tired of seeing the same old space ships, the same old aliens, and the same old costumes.
