Warcraft 3: Reforged What is Upkeep? You can't even avoid taxes in your favorite game. Upkeep is a tax based on your population.

Your population is calculated by how much of your population cap they take up.  You can increase your population cap by building Moonwells, Burrow, etc.

The Three Levels of Upkeep

Upkeep in Warcraft 3: Reforged has three levels.

  • No Upkeep: this is where you start and is in effect from 0-50 population cap.   As long as your population cap is 50 or below you receive all the gold that you extract from your mine(s).   This is important from both an economic and tactical point of view.
  • Low Upkeep: this level of upkeep is in effect from 51-80 population cap.  At this level of population you lose 30% of all gold that you extract from your mine(s).   You will probably spend a lot of time at this level of upkeep.
  • High Upkeep: this level of upkeep is in effect from 81-100 population cap.  At this level of population you lose 60% of all gold that you extract from your mine(s).  For obvious reasons, we don't suggest staying at this level for long.   Popping into this level before an attack to bolster your forces makes sense.   Sitting on 81 population in defence is just a loss of gold.

  • No Upkeep: (0-50 population) You get all the gold you extract from your mine(s).
  • Low Upkeep: (51-80 population) You get 70% of all the gold that you extract from your mine(s).
  • High Upkeep: (81-100 population) You get 40% of all the gold that you extract from your mine(s).
