Blizzard Entertainment finds itself in the legal spotlight this week courtesy of a class action lawsuit headed up by plaintiff Benjamin Bell, who recently filed a complaint against Blizzard Entertainment and parent company Activision Blizzard. The suit makes allegations of fraud, unjust enrichment, negligence, breach of contract and bailment, alleging that Blizzard made millions by deceptively and unfairly charging its customers for security authenticator products to secure personal information from hackers. The suit further alleges that Blizzard has also "negligently, deliberately, and/or recklessly" failed to properly safeguard player information and cites numerous incidents of account thefts and the plundering of personal information from the August hacking of the Battle.net database.
Bell is seeking class damages and an injunction on requirements to register a Battle.net account and to bar Activision Blizzard from adding undisclosed costs after a customer has purchased a game.
