Most folks who've heard of Crowfall probably haven't been keeping up with its development. When a project is years away, and unless you're a backer, I don't blame folks for not going all-in. Having played Crowfall, it has huge potential and the starting zones are surprisingly polished (it even runs really well). There's still tons for the developers to do, but it's coming together quickly and at this point, feels more about fine tuning systems and adding polish (which is surprising).
At the moment, the game is in pre-alpha 5.8, with 6.0's Alpha on the horizon, which brings even more features:
- The Dregs ruleset, which will allow guilds to fight for domination and control of the strategy map independent of any faction-based affiliation, and
- War tribes, A.I.-driven monster groups that will spread across the terrain like a contagion (using much the same technology as the Hunger, in fact,) and make the world feel much more alive
In the blog post, J. Todd Coleman goes on to discuss how - eventually - they'll have to call time on features.
Not everything will be in the game at alpha, but we hope to narrow down the list of new features and content so that our subsequent versions between now and release are increasingly made up of bug fixes, polish and optimization instead of adding “new stuff” to the game.
As with every MMO, at some point you have to “call it”; you decide on the specific list of features that you want to have finished (and polished) at launch and what will need to come later. Inevitably, there will be more things that you want than you can possibly fit on the schedule… which means that we will have to make some hard choices on what comes now and what comes later.
On the plus side, an MMO is never done. We can continue to add new features and content forever. The architecture of Crowfall is perfectly suited to this approach as each campaign is an opportunity to try a new variation on the existing rules and experience.
The fun is in not knowing how far we can go with our approach or where we end up.
