Daily Column

Loading... the perfect detox for your Black Friday shopping binge. Or not.

I figured we'd jump in on the gifts for him / her articles sweeping the internet in our own special way with Gifts for Guildmates 2008. Have a healer that halts his or her play session hours too soon? A tank that's becoming WAR weary? Because 3 AM feedings, jobs or school in the morning, random chores, frozen appendages, and just plain lack of energy or willpower is never an excuse, we offer these fine gifts to get that gamer back to where he or she belongs.

Creative HS-1200 Headset

Creative HS-1200 Wireless Headset • $99.99 (link)

I have two rules about headsets, 1) mini-jack ins and outs are way preferable to USB and 2) a light tension elastic headstrap is much better for long-term wear than the migraine-triggering rigid headband that most headsets use.

I'm tempted to break both of those rules for a HS-1200, marketed the world's first full-duplex wireless headset, which offers a 6-hour charge and conveniently mutes itself when the boom mic is raised. Now there's no excuse to get off vent while taking out the garbage or changing the baby, though you might want to ask your guildie to raise the mic and take advantage of the auto-mute feature during an extended bio-break.

Combine with a digital audiobook subscription from Audible.com and turn the soloing grind into sessions that level their brain power as well as their character.

Moshi IVR Alarm Clock

Moshi IVR Alarm Clock • $49.99 (link)

The world may not be ready for a fully voice-activated alarm clock complete with soothing HAL 2000-like responses and ahhh... nature sounds. But what better way to convince your guildmate of doing one more instance or PQ than an easy way to slim down that margin between normal wake-up time and "absolutely have to leave the house or I'll be late for work / school / pilates."

Assuming you got your guildmate that inflatabed last year so they can camp out in the computer roomat your beckon call, resetting the alarm clock becomes a handless, nearly motionless task. And the Moshi IVR alarm clock will do it with unparalelled style, it'at least until the escape clock comes to market.

USB Warmer Slippers

USB Warmer Slippers • $29.50 (link)

With rising energy costs, mom / significant other probably is less than amenable toward jacking up the thermostat for late night gaming. So we must take extreme measures to ensure that the guildmate in your life remains toasty well into the winter night.

I give you USB Warmer Slippers, straight from Asian oddball gadgeteer Rare Mono Shop. We're a few years away from wireless USB Warmer Slippers, so these puppies will ensure your guildie remains firmly planted in front of the computer where they belong or else risk frostbit phalanges.

5 Hour Energy Max Pack

5 Hour Energy Max Pack • $26.50 (link)

If the guildmate in your life has built up a sizable immunity to coffee and yet still lacks the spark to game well into the night or simply wants to avoid the unpredictable nature of high caffeine beverages (or hardcore drugs), its time for 5-hour energy. Nope, it's not just for truckers anymore. Since experts think 28 days or repetution are needed to form a psychological habit, we'd recommend ordering 2.5 packs for convenient home delivery.

It's as if the heavens foresaw the needs of your guild, (if it can't be done in five hours these days, it probably can't be done... time to drop down a tier), and distilled a delicate balm to give you that additional sharpness and mental accuity needed to drop that final boss. Now available in decaf too, but we'd advise against the singularly caustic lemon lime.

X360 Controller

Microsoft XBox 360 Controller for Windows • $49.99 (link)

While it seems lame on the surface, maybe all your guildie needs is a change of pace. Assuming your guildmate is already an avid voicechat user (which is, in fact, step one of getting them hooked), the USB-driven X360 controller works well on games such as WoW, AoC, and Warhammer Online with SwitchBlade Pro.

An X360 gamepad will also give that guildie something to look forward to as well, since 2009 MMOGs like Champions Online and Jumpgate Evolution are tailor-made for gamepads like Microsoft's venerable controller.

And if all else fails, take away that unpleasant financial pressure to play subscription games with a timecard. ToS-friendly reseller Playspan has codes ready for instant delivery with more payment options than you can shake a stick at. EVE gamers can turn those codes into virtual currency with a CCP-condoned official marketplace as well.

Shayalyn's Epic Thread of
the Day

From our Forum Help Forum

my rep is negative...how do i?

Don't
give a damn 'bout your reputation? Well, chinchaw supposedly does. This community
member posted a little something pornographic in our Daily "It Made Me Laugh!" Thread,
and that earned the ire of a few forum members who weren't impressed
with the shock site link and gave chinchaw a rep down using our forum's
reputation system. chinchaw, being the sensitive e.e. cummings type,
posted this cry for help:

"my
rep is -4.. how do i raise it? can i raise it up? i posted a sorta
pornographic site on the funny funny funny thread... will it raise or
it will just stay there? sorry for posting the site.. so guys dont post
those kinds of sites.. huhuhu  cry cry cry.. tears go endless
river.. huhuhu
."

Maybe they fell for the poetry of "tears go endless
river...huhuhu" (or maybe, unlike me, they don't suspect a trollish shill) but our compassionate forum members explained it all and wished chinchaw the best on the road to mental...er, reputational health.
