The race of the Dwarves is an ancient one, being descended from the Earthen in the early days of Azeroth. This makes them them one of the oldest races that still inhabits Azeroth.
Dwarven history is filled with strife as this proud and stoic race constantly clashes with each other over matters of honour. Initially the three great dwarven clans were the Bronzebeards, Wildhammers, and Dark Irons, and they all lived in relative peace in Ironforge. However the War of the Three Hammers broke out and raged for years. During this time the Bronzebeards claimed Ironforge and the others went their own way.
When the Orcs invaded Azeroth the dwarves of Ironforge joined the Humans Grand Alliance and helped the humans secure victory in many battles. This secured them a place of both honour and respect in the Alliance.
Much more recently when the Cataclysm struck the Dwarven King Magni communed with the earth and was transformed into diamond and became part of Ironforge itself. This set of a chain of events as the dwarven factions fought for control, that led to the creation of the Council of Three Hammers and the end of the exile from Ironforge of the other two clans.
The Dark Irons, Wildhammers, and Bronzebeards all now have representation in dwarven government and are working together all in Ironforge after centuries apart. Given that a Dwarf never really forgets or forgives a grudge though, how long this alliance will last remains to be seen.href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/233786" target="_blank"> src="http://www.tentonhammer.com/image/view/233786" alt="Dun Morogh"

Map of Dun Morogh
As a Dwarf you start in the zone of Dun Morogh, which also houses your capital city of Ironforge. Dun Morogh is a mountainous snowy region that is almost completely sealed off from the neighboring zones. The only way in or out of the zone is by flying over the mountains or traveling through a select few, well guarded tunnels through the mountains.
When you start out as a Dwarf you will find yourself in the small and secluded Coldridge Valley in the south-west corner of the zone. This is where you start your leveling. As you progress to roughly level 4 you will leave the valley to explore outwards to Kharanos, Frostmane Hold, Gnomeregan and then east towards Amberstill Ranch and Gol'bolar Quarry. This will get you to at least level 10 and then it will be time to head out of the zone to the east and into Loch Modan.

Dwarves can be the following classes:
Dwarves are a great race to choose if you are going to be a tank as a Death Knight, Monk, Paladin, or Warrior due to their stoneform ability which allows them to take less damage for a short while as well as clearing several nasty debuffs. In addition due to the extra crit with guns they make a good choice as a hunter.

The Dwarves feature a fitting mount as their racial mount, being that it is short, stout, stubborn, and sturdy. In other words it is exactly like a Dwarf. The animal in question that serves as the mount for the Dwarven race is a Ram. Oh, did we mention it has a thick skull as well? Not that we know any Dwarves with a thick skull, do we?
