Daily Column

Loading... neither snow, nor rain, nor lowbie griefing douchebags will keep us from our appointed rounds.

Today marked our first significant snowfall of the year here in the mountains of Pennsylvania. While 4 inches won't stop the school buses around here, this marks the first time since my early teens when the snow-filled imagery of that grade school Thanksgiving song, "Over the river and through the woods," doesn't seem like cruel joke born of a bygone era when no one cared about atmospheric CO2 levels.

There is something starter-zone-on-launch-day in my neighborhood about a good old fashioned civilization-halting mega-blizzard, though, and it's one of the reasons I'd be loathe to move southward, despite other regional blessings like a persistant cold from October to April and the kind of outdoor chill that tears your eyes, severs your hands and ears, and drives icicles into your nasal cavity. Everything is new, people are engaged in their own little quests - clearing sidewalks with their scudding snow shovels or working with strangers to free their car from the street's icy clutches, tires spinning with that haunting sound that never can be erased from the tape recorder in your head. We even have our own equivalent of the mostly naked Night Elf dancer when such visual oddities as cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, and even a horse-drawn sleigh appeared one year on the unplowed snow pack.

Then someone comes by with their epic snowblower and everyone smiles inwardly - someday we too will have an epic snowblower. One of my neighbors actually had an epic mount of sorts: a plow- and tow-chain equipped four-wheeler ATV that he kept in a backyard shed. Before he moved away, our winter street was a utopia of neatly stacked snow, instantly cleared sidewalks and driveways, and plenty of street parking.

As you can probably tell, it's a slow news day. But after the run of news we've had lately, between staff cuts at Funcom and the Tabula Rasa shutdown announcement, I'm fine with that. We do have one or two items to report, not counting the Molten Core Atari port, which itself marks the first time a Blizzard April Fools prank has come true (albeit seven months late).

EVE Online's player election results are in, and in an interesting turn of events, Serbian Vuk Lau will take chairman's ... er, chair for the second ever Council of Stellar Management. If someone pods this Serbian leader, could we see another Great War? (Bad historical joke.) And a look at the statistics gone wild on the election page (you have to love CCP) shows that the world has yet another reason to dislike the US, which held sway over the largest percentage of the vote but had the second lowest turnout of the 20-odd countries listed.

If your interests are less stellar in nature, Cryptic Studios now has an amusingly well-crafted Which Champion Are You? survey posted. I came in as the mildy mischievious villain Foxbat, probably because I have a tough time taking online surveys seriously.

Which Champion are you? Did you make the scale? Share your thoughts in the Loading... forum or, as always, feel free to email me.

Question

Today's
epic thread is stupid, but it is for its sheer stupidity (and the fact
that the accompanying Awesome Quote mentions both myself and Boomjack,
thus appealing to our narcissistic sides) that I love it so. You see,
bi0g3n just wants to ask you a question. Biog3n's friend bought this game and "he says its really slow like 60,000 exp from level 8 to 9 or something is it?"

Well, is it? Forget the run-on sentence and just answer the question!

Our
community might be able to shed some light if only they knew which game
bi0g3n was talking about. But we don't, so this question makes us
perform a classic facepalm in dismay. (It also made me search for signs of Viagra spammer tendencies in bi0g3n, although I failed to find any...yet.)

Several community members have tried and failed to answer bi0g3n. How strong is your mojo? Can you answer the question?

Awesome Quote from the
Epic Thread
:

"No way, man! Leveling in Ten Ton Hammer is quick and easy peasy. Plus,
it's fun when you and your guildmates take on Barbarious in a level 30
raid. Watch out for the big bad Boomjack in the level 50 raid though,
he's nasty. You will need buffs from the sorceress Shayalyn just to
survive
."
